Set in Norway’s black metal scene, Lords of Chaos unfolds as a violent and controversial tale of music, rebellion, and destruction.
The film follows Euronymous (Rory Culkin), the founder of the band Mayhem, who seeks to revolutionize Norwegian black metal. As he gathers a group of extreme musicians, including Dead (Jack Kilmer) and Varg Vikernes (Emory Cohen), their obsession with dark imagery and chaos spirals into real-life violence, church burnings, and murder.
Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, the film premiered at Sundance on January 23, 2018, and was released in the U.S. on February 8, 2019. Featuring Sky Ferreira, Valter Skarsgård, and Anthony De La Torre, Lords of Chaos was praised for its intense performances, though it received mixed reactions from the metal community. Based on the 1998 book of the same name, the film explores the dark side of fame, ideology, and obsession.
More than just a music biopic, Lords of Chaos is a story of ambition, destruction, and the consequences of extreme beliefs.
